About

Bert Evans, was born in Port Talbot, he studied painting at Newport College of Art, guided by artists like Jack Crabtree and Selwyn Jones. A painter of light, he transforms ordinary scenes with a loose style and keen sense of colour, often inspiring positive reactions. Bert is a proud member of the Royal Watercolour Society of Wales.

Although he has enjoyed experimenting in watercolour, its his oil paintings that have earned him his reputation and he can count Hollywood actor Michael Sheen to be a big fan of his work, having purchased several Bert Evans Originals.

” I use a digital camera to catch those instant patterns of light on a subject and this is the crux. I’m concerned with the effects of how light renders a scene or object, rather than be interested in the subject for it own sake.

The image then gets redrawn with pencil until a simple 3 or 4 tone pattern emerges. A recipe of limited colours is the applied as the subject is painted, which has lead to a familiar subject being presented in a new stimulating way”

My subject matter tends to be people and places I encounter everyday, here in Wales.

I like to move from one medium to another, but overall enjoy working in watercolour - both for its transparent and opaque form.

My work is currently represented at
